by Brooke Doughtie - SSISD Instructional Technology Specialist Textbooks, notebooks, pencils, and chalkboards are phasing out of the evolving 21st century classroom. We are realizing how vital it is for our students to experience the environment they will enter as modern day workers. Therefore, we are seeing new teaching tools emerging such as interactive boards, projectors, devices, and online instructional materials. However, we must keep in mind that integrating technology is for enhancing your already great lessons. The tool itself cannot replace good instruction, well planned units, and research based strategies. We must consider the lesson goals before deciding to use technology and then align the tools with the goals. Will technology enrich, extend or facilitate learning in my lesson? If so, how? How can we incorporate technology, rather than simply making it available? It has the power to transform a classroom into a more learner centered environment. TPACK, or Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge, is a model that helps teachers combine content knowledge, pedagogical strengths, and instructional technology. Visit Common Sense Media to learn more about the TPACK Model and how you can use it to increase student motivation and make the content more accessible to students.
